LIBRARY SELECTION POLICIES

Library material selection policies require our libraries to provide materials that stimulate growth and knowledge, literary appreciation, support the curriculum, and provide materials on both sides of opposing issues. Our school libraries have a responsibility to serve all of the readers in our care. Students are not only different ages; they arrive at school with different reading levels, different backgrounds, and different experiences that have shaped their lives. We have a responsibility to offer a wide range of book choices that meet all of their diverse needs. We respect your right to help your student choose reading material. Your student’s library records are available upon your request.

DISTRICT MEDIA CURRICULUM

Kearney Public Schools Media Literacy Purpose Statement:

The media literacy curriculum empowers students to be creative and critical thinkers, responsible users, and competent producers of media and information. School librarians foster a community in which reading, writing, speaking, listening, and thinking serve as the foundation for learning for life.

The Kearney Public Schools District Media Program abides by the standards set forth by the American Association of School Libraries (AASL) and the Nebraska Multiple Literacy Standards. The program is also influenced by International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) standards.

DIGITAL CITIZENSHIP RESOURCES

Scope and Sequence for the KPS Internet Safety Curriculum - Common Sense Media is a website dedicated to helping kids thrive in a world of media and technology. The organization aims to "empower parents and educators by providing unbiased information, trusted advice, and innovative tools to help them harness the power of media and technology as a positive force in all kids' lives."

National Online Safety Parent Platform Guides - National Online Safety is an organization supported by the National Education Group in the UK. Their mission is to "educate and empower trusted adults with the information they need to engage in meaningful dialogue between children and young people about the online world, their online activities and the ever-evolving risks that they are exposed to. [They] focus on both general online safety risks and platform specific risks to provide adults with easy to follow information which enables conversations between adults and children."

MISSION STATEMENT:

The Kearney Public Schools library media program supports the educational goals of the district. School libraries create a learning community that provides equitable access to information, teaches information literacy skills, and encourages inquiry. The school librarians nurture collaborative thinking and learning that produces creative students who have an appreciation of literature, critical thinking skills, and a respect for others and self.
