 The Glenwood Community Organization (GCO) is the parent-teacher support organization for Glenwood Elementary. The GCO sponsors a number of events, activities and fundraisers to benefit the students, staff and teachers at Glenwood Elementary. We would like to invite all parents to be involved in GCO; your involvement is a vital part of our efforts to provide extracurricular opportunities and raise money for a range of school improvements and classroom needs. You may use the link provided below.


GCO meetings for the 2019-2020 year will be held on:
September 9th, November 11th, January 13th, March 9th, April 6th & May 11th
All meetings are conducted at Glenwood Elementary beginning at 7:00 pm and typically last an hour. Parents of Glenwood students are invited and encouraged to attend. There are countless opportunities for you to volunteer in GCO-sponsored initiatives. We welcome your active involvement in your child's education while at Glenwood Elementary. Listed below are activities that will be sponsored by GCO.
 Running Club – Coordinate extracurricular activities to promote healthy choices and an active lifestyle.

 T-Shirt Sales – Design, coordinate and sell Glenwood Elementary t-shirts; new t-shirts are designed each year to highlight our Gladiator pride. 2019-2020 Chair: Jason Downing jason.downing17@yahoo.com .
 Fall Festival – Coordinate and implement the Fall Festival; Fall Festival is our family fun event in which Glenwood families can enjoy a meal, games and friendship with others from our school.

 Healthy Snack Sale - Responsible for coordinating the sales table at the healthy snack sale on the designated class day. 2019-2020 Chair: Theresa Sweet theresasweet00@gmail.com 
 Behavior Rewards Celebration – Assist with a special celebration activity each quarter to reward students who have demonstrated outstanding behavior. 2019-2020 Chair: Krisa Howland krisa.howland@gmail.com 
 Parent-Teacher Conference Meals – Coordinate and provide meals for the teachers and staff at both fall and spring conferences. 2019-2020 Chair: Stefani Wegner stefanidwegner@gmail.com
 Box Top Rewards coordinator –Collect, count and submit Box Tops for rewards. Money earned will go towards GCO activities. 2019-2020 Chair: Jennifer Koch kochbj23@hotmail.com
 Outdoor Classroom – Oversee and maintain the Outdoor Classroom; the outdoor classroom is our Glenwood garden and serves as one of the features of the KPS 1st grade annual event.

Spring Fundraiser – Coordinate the annual spring fundraising event designed to provide an evening of fun and entertainment for Glenwood families. 2019-2020 Chair: volunteer needed 
 5th Grade Appreciation – Coordinate 5th grade appreciate activities and provide a gift for 5th graders as they leave Glenwood Elementary to go to middle school. 2019-2020 Chair: Jolene Karjalainen jojokarj@gmail.com
Field Day – Coordinate and oversee the annual spring field day; field day is generally held one of the last days of school as a fun day for all the kids at Glenwood. 2019-2020 Chair: Erin Swarm eriswarm@kearneycats.com

Meeting Minutes

September 9, 2019

 Meeting was called to order at 7:03pm.

 Approval of Minutes

After review, MSC to approve the April 4, 2019 minutes.

 Treasurer Report

After a review, MSC to approve the treasurer report.

 Old Business

 Spring Dinner Review

o   Hot dogs and pulled pork was served.  Over 120 hot dogs and over 120 pulled pork sandwiches served.

o   To Go Containers were very helpful.

o   Prices and wristbands went over well.

o   Prizes were great.

o   Cotton Candy was a huge hit.

o   Possibly hamburgers this year.

o   Need to better promote pre-ordering for the night.

 5th Grade Celebration Review

o   Discussed the tiles, poster boards, etc.

o   Jolene is chairing this committee this year. 

  Field Day Review

o   Kids got to go bowling this year due to the rain.

o   Parents felt that the Big Apple was a hit.

New Business

2019-2020 Committee and Chair Positions

o   Went through the list of Chairs

o   Discussed putting the Sign Up Genius in the Gladiator Glance for parents to see what they signed up for.

  GCO Co-Chair Nomination and Election

o   Jason announced that this will be his final year as the GCO Chair after six years as Chair. 

o   Nominated Sidnee Tidwell as Co-Chair for GCO.

o   MSC to approve Sidnee Tidwell as Co-Chair with Jason Downing for the 2019-20 school year.

   Fall Celebration Plan

o   Discussed the date of Tuesday, October 20, 2019 – with meal served from 5-7pm.

o   Pizza, breadsticks and salad was a success.

o   Discussion of more breadsticks and ranch this year.  Don’t need as many croutons and bacon bits. 

o   Need to have 80% of the pizza at the beginning of the festival. 

o   Discussion on the prize point system and more communication this year for volunteers.  More explanation on the 

     punch card.    

o   Continue to promote pre-ordering.

o   Need more help and volunteers in the game rooms.

o   Continue to have student alumnae to come and help with the games. 

o   Looking to sororities and fraternities for help as well as the athletic department.

o   Suggestion to have more open classrooms to do games because the rooms were so packed. 

o   Could use a classroom for the balloons to open up the hallway.

o   Looking to see if there could be a big raffle or prize for the night as a giveaway.

o   May need some more game donated to play.  Parents discussed games they can bring.

o   Could add an explanation of the punch card in the pre-order form. 

o   Continue to keep wrist bands at $5.

  T-Shirt Sales Recap

o   Jason Downing and Brooke Hughes worked with Moonlight on this.

o   39 orders were submitted with $1700 spent.

o   10% will come back to Glenwood on these orders.

o   Most popular shirt was the one with the large “G” on the front.

o   This amount is pretty consistent past years.

o   There is going to be a second chance order. 

o   Discussed the possibility of having a spot to donate money for a child who may not be able to afford a shirt and then the school social worker may be able to help identify some children that could benefit from a shirt.

  Outdoor Classroom Updates

o   Tessa will help Jason with this project.

o   They will be learning from the teachers what the needs are for the outdoor classroom at this point.

  Morning Marathon Updates

o   Katie has been an excellent volunteer for this and will only have a student at Glenwood for two more years.  Need to start thinking of her replacement. 

 Principal Report

·  Mrs. Schall gave her first Principal’s report.  She thanked the parents for welcoming her so well to Glenwood as principal.

·  She thanked GCO for the cabinets and Parent Teacher Conference meals on behalf of the teachers.

·  Discussed the wonderful community school that Glenwood is.

·  Discussed the KPS Facilities team did lots of work in and outside of the building to prepare for the school year. 

·  Fall testing was just completed to go over during Parent Teacher Conferences.

·  New this year – “Nebraska Reading Improvement Act” with a primary focus of K-3.  Created to help children who struggle       in the area of reading.  The District has provided additional resources.

·  SAEBRE screeners starting for KPS to as a Social Emotional Academic Emotional Risk Screener

·  New Science curriculum “Amplify Science”

·  Two additional supports as interventions – ZEARN and Amplify Reading. 

·  Ideas for the GCO to help fund may be playground equipment updates.  A piece on the playground recently broke.

   Possibly needing more barrels for the zip line.         

·  Discussed having a service element during the Quarterly reward celebrations to support #Bekind and may need supplies          for this. 

·  STEM activity ideas for the year.
