Emerson Elementary Principal Megan Schmidt will be transferring to the new principal position at the Kearney Education Center starting in the 2019-2020 school year. Schmidt has been principal of Emerson since 2014. According to Superintendent Kent Edwards, Schmidt is the perfect fit for the Kearney Education Center where the Bright Futures Preschool is housed.

“Mrs. Schmidt is a talented leader and will work well with our youngest students, especially those with special needs,” said Edwards. “Given her experience and expertise in elementary education and special education, Megan will be an excellent leader for these students and staff.”

“Although it is bittersweet to leave my Emerson Family, I am excited to begin this new adventure in my career,” stated Schmidt. “Early education is critical for all students, and I am excited to play a major role in the continuous improvement for these programs for the district and community.”

Schmidt will be the first, full-time principal at the Kearney Education Center where the following KPS programs are located: Bright Futures Preschool, Bright Futures Toddler Program, Bright Futures Home Visitation Program, the KPS Family Engagement Center, and the KHS Education Opportunity Center program. Tom Jochum, current KEC/Glenwood Principal is retiring at the end of this school year.

Schmidt earned a BA in Education (2002) and a Masters in Educational Leadership (2007) from Doane College. Her certifications include Elementary Education, Special Education, and an Elementary Principal Endorsement. At KPS, she has been active on the School Improvement Team, Positive Behavioral Supports Leadership Team, Response to Intervention Data Team, as well as other committees.

Prior to coming to KPS, Schmidt worked at Millard and Bennington Public Schools.
