Groundbreaking
at the NEW
Kearney High School

Scott D. Morris Institute
at Kearney High School

Thanks to a $1.75 million gift from the Scott D.  and Rochelle Morris, a 10,000 sq. ft. addition to the new Kearney High School will promote Career and Technical Education pathways (CTE) for KHS students. The Scott D. Morris Institute will provide large, modernized, CTE classrooms complete with state-of-the-art technology and equipment. Students of the Institute will be prepared to take skilled positions in high-growth sectors of the economy, like manufacturing and technology. Scott D. and Rochelle Morris have also committed to a future scholarship fund to support students participating in the Institute.

Scott Morris, CEO of Morris Press and KHS graduate, along with Rochelle Morris, former educator for Kearney Public Schools appreciates the value of technical education and training and have generously made a gift to ensure that it is available to students at KHS.   “We are excited to support the efforts of Kearney High School in educating students in the career and technical education pathways,” said Morris.  “We believe the Institute will provide strong networks of support for students and our community for generations to come.”

KHS students will benefit from classes in the Scott D. Morris Institute with hands-on experience in technical careers.  Students who concentrate intensely in IT (Information Technology), STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math), manufacturing and culinary arts will experience comprehensive programming with modern high tech equipment. To boost student knowledge and interest in CTE programs, KHS will offer specific mentoring and career counseling in that area of interest.

“We are unbelievably fortunate to be standing at the forefront of this exciting opportunity for our students,” said Brian Maher, KPS Superintendent.  “The Scott D and Rochelle Morris gift will affect our students and our community for generations.”

Partnerships with the Institute and local businesses will prepare students for highly skilled jobs.  Local and state businesses will partner with the Scott D. Morris Institute and participate in an Advisory Board to develop strong career-pathways at KHS.  Those important business/industry partners will be acknowledged with signage at the entrance of the Scott D. Morris Institute. Partners will also have the opportunity to meet with Kearney High students on a regular basis regarding internships and job opportunities and will become valued mentors to our students.

The students attending classes at the Scott D. Morris Institute will learn new academic content and career skills through hands-on exposure with real-world equipment. The continuous career counseling and mentoring by true business partners will enhance education at KHS.   The Institute will become a convening place for local business and industry partners.

“It is our mission to prepare students for life after graduation, whether that means  postsecondary education or entering the job market,” said Maher.  “This generous gift will help us accomplish that goal through high quality career and technical education at the new Scott D. Morris Institute.”
