KPS RECEIVES PRESCHOOL GRANT
Kearney Public Schools is happy to announce the acquisition of a Sixpence Expansion Grant for preschool programming. The grant of $118,171 and $25,000 Startup is for 2015-16 school year. According to Associate Superintendent Carol Renner, the grant will allow KPS to open a second toddler program that will serve children ages 18 months to 2.5 years. The new toddler program will operate in a year-round format going Monday through Friday from 8am to 3:30pm. “This is a wonderful step forward to build the strongest learning foundation for some of our students at risk,” said Renner. For the toddler program, students are selected based on criteria such as poverty, second language, teen parent, premature birth. Applications can be found at kearneypublicschools.org.
HENNING CERTIFIED IN DIGITAL CITIZENSHIP
Judy Henning, Kearney Public Schools District Media Director, has become a Certified Educator in Common Sense Digital Citizenship. Christine Ho, Education Administrator of Common Sense Education, states, “We are truly inspired by your devotion to teaching young people how to be safe, responsible digital citizens.”
“Judy is an outstanding librarian who has adapted well to the dramatic technological changes that have taken place over the past decade,” said KHS Principal Jay Dostal. “She is a consummate professional who is always trying to improve her knowledge and help students become savvy digital citizens.” According to Dostal, Henning puts together weekly digital citizenship lessons that are taught to all KHS students in Bearcat Time and is a leader in this domain for all staff.
MOON SELECTED AS INTERIM SUPERINTENDENT PENDING SUCCESSFUL CONTRACT NEGOTIATIONS.
The Kearney Public Schools Board of Education has announced that Dr. Virginia Moon has been named the district’s Inte
rim Superintendent for the 2015-16 school year. Dr. Moon will begin her duties with the school district July 1 and will serve as the district Superintendent through June of 2016. She will be replacing Dr. Brian Maher, who is leaving the school district June 30. Dr. Maher has accepted the Superintendency position with Sioux Falls Public Schools in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
Dr. Moon served as superintendent of the Ralston Public Schools in Ralston, Nebraska for eleven years before retiring in 2009. Since her retirement, Dr. Moon served as the Interim Superintendent of the Broken Bow Public Schools for two years from July 2010 to June 2012. She also served as Interim Superintendent of the Omaha Public Schools from July of 2012 to June of 2013. Currently, Dr. Moon works as a lobbyist and consultant for the Nebraska Council of School Administrators. The Board anticipates naming the next Superintendent by late fall of 2015.
